Welcome to the first edition of our Developer Diaries. First chapters of our diary will be dedicated to the introduction of our development team, the people responsible for creating “Klotzen! Panzer Battles.” After that, we plan to introduce various gameplay elements and mechanics we feel are interesting and likable. In today’s episode, you will get a chance to know our 3D Team Lead, Dario Magdic.
Hello. Please introduce yourself
Hello, I’m Dario Magdic. I enjoyed playing computer games from a young age. When I got the desire to start working on them that was the time I started to learn 3D modeling. At college, I got a chance to finally create my own game. This was the time I learned a lot about game development. After college, I was looking for a job and saw Maxim Games advertisement. They were searching for a game programmer for which I applied but got invited to be a 3D artist instead. I gladly accepted.
That’s an interesting turn of events – to apply to one position and end up working on another one. I guess you still liked it since it was closer to what you would like to do – 3D modeling, right? Could you name a few favorite games?
TES Morrowind, Diablo 2, WarCraft 3, Fallout 3, Black and White, Baldur’s Gate 1,2
Wow, that’s a nice list – only good games! Playing the aforementioned games, did you imagine you are going to be a game developer in the future?
I imagined that whenever I played a game. I always thought about how developers have created this or that. I thought if I were to create the same game what would I change or make different?
Please tell us what you have worked on for Maxim Games?
My position was 3D Team Lead. I did most of the 3D models. I was responsible for modeling, texturing, and animating most of the units in the game, including tanks, airplanes, ships, and infantry. Also, I did some of the terrain details. The realistic scenes for the main menu were also done by me.
I like those menu scenes a lot! Tell me how they were done
They represent the Battle of Arnhem – it was my main inspiration. So Zoran(Zoran Stanic the head of Maxim Games) got to me with concepts from our designer, and I started with simple 3D models like airplanes and tanks and then created surroundings like a bridge and ruined buildings. Later on, I combined the models with scenes where lighting was set and cameras and models were animated.
What did you like to work on the most?
Working on tanks was the most fun for me.
Why did you decide to go with the 3D modeling?
Well, I always had a need to create and tell a story. I started with painting and all that art stuff. When I discovered 3D modeling, it was a whole new level. In the beginning, it was hard. I had a dial-up Internet, and downloading even a text tutorial required an effort. But somehow I stayed with it and always advanced. When I could, I created the images from my imagination. That gave me extra inspiration to continue creating and learning.
Do you continue with painting nowadays?
I do digital painting and coloring comic books sometimes.
Thank you for taking your time to make this interview possible!
